But it may not be necessary for an Irish monk to have visited --say-- Rockcastle County-- for a cultural influence to have been felt. It may turn out that some early contact spread a notion of written language that for a time was popular, and then faded away. The idea that Native American people were unable to grasp complex concepts like writing, and thus could not be the producers of artifacts like these, is ludicrous.
