Peeking at Ivan's SITU files.

Bad aching back today. Putting up Ivan's newsclip picture of the Yarmouth Sea Serpent is the best I can do. Maybe Caddy in a couple of days with some relief. Still have no idea what I'm looking at in this Yarmouth picture. Maybe one of you do.

The brown-yellowed old newsclip from Ivan's file. Color is at least striking regardless. Is it an oarfish??

  1. What the heck is that?!

It doesn't look too much like an oarfish and the guy at far right is holding it up by the caudal fin that they don't have. Eels don't have one either. If there's any dorsal fin...I can't see it.

The way the body is suspended between the men makes it appear odd to me. Shouldn't it be drooping under its own weight? It seems quite light in the way they hold it and their postures are relaxed.

There's another image available that looks much cleaner, but it's only 14kb and no use for scrutinising. If there's a way to access a higher-res version from the site, it isn't obvious.

You can see it here: http://www.librarything.com/work/11040912

  3. My final guess is a de-barked tree with a head shape carved into it!

Bad back? Swimming helps a lot...and the best mattress you can afford. :\

  4. You're right. It's the Ballard Sea Serpent. A tree no real animal. Please take a look at http://www.seattle.gov/CityArchives/Exhibits/annexation/panel2_image11.htm or http://www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo/rights-managed/IH155667/sea-serpent-on-the-beach-ca-1906/?ext=1.

  5. whacky ... means that whoever ran the picture that Ivan had, committed a deliberate hoax, as it is labeled 9 years earlier and wildly different location.
